We want to help our clients be aware of prescriptions to outside pharmacies. If you decide to purchase your pet’s medication from an outside pharmacy, we will need to provide you with a written prescription form. In the age of online pet pharmacies and human pharmacies carrying animal medications, the risk of improper medications or erroneous directions has increased, as there is no verification system in place like there is when human doctors send prescriptions to pharmacies.
Also, many human pharmacists can misinterpret a medication due to it being for an animal, not a human, since dosing, instructions, and use can often be very different. To ensure there is no misunderstanding when it comes to your pet’s medication, if you are wanting to use an outside pharmacy, Kearny Mesa Veterinary Center will prepare written prescriptions for you to take directly to the pharmacy, or to be sent to an online pharmacy. This prescription form is valid at all pharmacies, allowing you to freely decide where to purchase your pet’s medication. Digital versions of these written prescriptions are not commonly accepted at pharmacies, so the original written prescription should be picked up from Kearny Mesa Veterinary Center.
We encourage people to use our Online Store whenever possible as this completely avoids the need for a written prescription, decreases delays, and each product on our online store is backed by the same guarantee as products sold in our hospital. Be cautious of buying veterinary exclusive medications (such as flea, tick, or heartworm preventatives) though outside pharmacies, who often cannot verify they are receiving their stock directly from the manufacturer, as they usually are supplied through a third party vendor. We want to ensure your pets are safe and your medications come from a reputable source.
